How to Furnish a Small Bedroom

I live in Montreal, a city known for having very small apartments with even smaller bedrooms.

A theme I continuously see in clients' spaces is: How can I furnish a small bedroom so it's comfortable, has a nice flow, yet multi-functional?

Since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in 2020, nearly everyone has had to convert a part of their home into their office. This is why space planning is so critical in interior design, and can be a very fun and creative element in your homes.

Here are some small bedroom trends...

1. Closet-Bed/Daybed

The epitome of small-space comfort. Convert the closet into your bed & free up some space! This works very well for any room; nursery, teen room, parents room, even guest room! Just remove the door from your closet and slide in your bed/daybed, or create a built in. For a small kid's room, you can divide the space by adding a loft bed and turning the bottom area into a reading/play area or a place to hang their clothes.

Here's what www.biggerthanthethreeofus.com did! As you can see they made great space of their closet-loft area by adding shelving, a rack for clothes, hamper, and some storage baskets! See how easier it can be to convert a small place into a multi-functional area?

Then of course you can turn it into a reading nook/daybed, this is also perfect for anyone who loves to cuddle up with a good book and a cup of tea and read away in their own little world. You can also use this as an extra space for guests to sleep!

Now this is truly a vision! Notice how hymnsandverses.com added great accent details like a curtain rod and some sheer white curtains. We can also see some added shelving, accent pillows, a wonderful ottoman, and a whicker hanging pendant. This looks great for a girl's room of any age! To make it more masculine, opt for darker tones: dark brown or black wood for the daybed, use materials like metal and iron instead of wood for the accent pieces (shelving, curtain hooks). Another fun way to add a pop of personality would be to add wall paper! Etsy, Amazon, and Wal-Mart all have great options for stick-and-peel and it would look amazing in these open-closet spaces.

2. Loft Beds

Loft beds are a huge thing nowadays - especially for teenagers! And as always, IKEA has all the answers.

Here's a quick render I made using www.coohom.com to help portray a great idea for a loft bed/study area. This is an awesome way to maximize space by combining the two most commonly used areas by kids, teens, and adults. As I said before, IKEA is a great place to go to for finding pieces like this to create a great and cohesive looking space. Spaces like this are ideal for teenagers, siblings who may share a room, or students in a dorm room! Adding gold touches can help add contrast and pops of interest. Blush pink, powder blue, or sage green are great colours that would go well with the white of the loft and desk. If you want a more masculine look, or maybe the finish you got is darker, then darker shades of blue and green would also look great. Adding a floor lamp on the side (if you have space) is of course optional, instead you can add filing cabinet/storage area or a plant. You can also swap the desk for a vanity or a dresser.

3. Storage Beds

Everything you need all in one - what else could be better?

Starting off with a look from Pottery Barn Teens. This storage bed offers literally everything you could ever need; bed, desk, and a dresser. Now this is really ideal for anyone living in a dorm or their first apartment because it really maximizes functionality and space, while also looking very chic. IKEA does have a few similar options:

This is the SLAKT bed frame from IKEA that does offer a ton of storage, but doesn't include a pop out desk like the previous one from Pottery Barn. You can still add a desk at the foot of the bed, and if you're really tight on space, instead of getting a full length desk opt for one that will just support a laptop or monitor.

For example:

MICKE Corner work station

MICKE Desk

If you need ideas for wall storage, floating shelves are a great option, but something that's become more trendy (and is seriously convenient): Pegboards.

SKADIS Pegboard

Attach these to your doors, above your bed, desk area, in your kitchen, and it works amazing as an extra piece of hanging storage.

Pretty much everyone will run into a situation where they have to deal with a small space and will have no idea what to do with it. These ideas offer a way to tackle multi-functional spaces in a tight area, and also give you the opportunity to be creative and have fun with the space. Have fun, and don't be afraid to move things around until you find the perfect fit.
